Safe drinking water in just six hours

Posted last August 17, 2012, 5:31 am in Health report article

CLEAN WATER is one of the world’s scarcest resources. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over a billion people lack access to safe drinking water. Could it finally be time to shine for solar disinfection?

Solar water disinfection, also nicknamed SODIS, is a cheap, reliable method of killing the germs in untreated water, without fancy gadgets or gizmos. Basically, what people do is they get an ordinary plastic bottle with a lid, fill it with whatever water they have available, and then place that in direct sunlight for a minimum of six hours.

During the exposure, ultraviolet radiation kills the diarrhea-causing pathogens in the water. This is of key importance as more than 4,000 children still die of diarrhea every day.

SODIS is designed for use at the household level. It is simple yet effective in eliminating water-borne pathogens; it is very affordable and utilizes locally available materials.

SODIS Steps:

1. Prepare empty plastic bottles - transparent plastic bottles from softdrinks and bottled water (1.5 to 2 liter). Wash bottles including the cap using soap with soft material like cloth. Rinse fully.

2. Pour water in plastic bottles.

3. Place water-filled bottles horizontally under direct sunlight for a minimum of six hours. You can place it anywhere, as long as there is enough sunlight.

4. Harvest the SODIS water, set aside to cool before drinking.

Types of Diseases Prevented by SODIS

Sodis affects pathogens present in the drinking water and reduces or prevents diseases caused by these pathogens:

* Infectious diarrhea from bacterial infections with enteropathogenic Escherichia coli

* Dysentery watery diarrhea from bacterial infections with Salmonella or Shigella

* Dysentery from parasitic infection with Giardia lamblia (Giardiasis) or Entamoeba hystolica (Amoebiasis)

* Cholera from bacterial infection with Vibrio cholera

SODIS  is promoted in the Philippines by HELVETAS, MIGROS, Palawan Advocates for Good Governance & Empowerment & SAGE.
